Debt, death, and drugs pulse rhythmically in stories of—and eulogies for—grifters, it-girls, horsegirls, husbands, and questionable art enthusiasts. Scammer extraordinaire P.T. Barnum once asserted that "clowns are the pegs on which the circus is hung," a prescient metaphor for the present day New York City that Mathios documents herein.
